About Recording Artist Gene Mascoli
...and then it dawned on me; it's never too late to live your life…
Every song has a story, every picture a moment in time. I tell my stories and share my moments through my music and art. I've been at this for many years but only now getting back into it in a meaningful way after a very long hiatus.
I wrote my first song in the late 60s, picking it out on a creaky old no-name acoustic guitar. Did my first pastel drawings a bit earlier. I continued with the guitar and songwriting through my teens. Kinda let the art go. Started writing a lot of poetry about that time. But even then the best poems were song lyrics.
Usual career trajectory - started a band, played local clubs, kept writing. College found me pursuing the dream, trips to LA record companies with reel-to-reel demos, trying to get signed, band breakups and reforms, countless hours practicing. My passion though was songwriting and I pursued it with a vengeance.
By 1980 I was newly married with many music dreams starting to get tarnished. Bandmates making the painful decision to pull the plug, get a real career gig. And inevitably I followed suit, with little to show, some meager royalty checks and local press.
Kept my fingers in it though. Just to keep me sane from my 9-5. Kept writing songs. Started to dabble again in art.
Fast forward to 2000. The ability to express myself with music was enhanced big time by Apple's GarageBand. For the first time I had the tools to do my own solo recordings. I took to it like the proverbial fish to water. But still the job, money matters, getting the kids through school and college.
And then everything changed. I quit the job, packed it up, moved and took a deep breath. And after that breath I got my colored pencils, pastels and paints out and got busy, really busy. Yes!
Sat down at my recently acquired grand piano and started writing again. Sat down at my DAW and recorded, and recorded and recorded.
And now it's 2024 and I am very very happy. And I've decided to share my music, my art, my life with you. Have a listen, take a look and be happy.
